![]() What’s really special about them is that the quality of music is such that even if their wasn’t already a graphic novel for each release, a new listener could easily imagine what that might look like just by listening to them!Ībsolutely it does! Shrouded in mystery with their cloaks and masks, their image on stage is exactly and mysterious and otherworldly as the music that they play. Their melding of what is an intrinsically visual genre (its overall sound being very closely tied to imagery and iconography from the 80s and most especially John Carpenter-esque soundtracks) to a fully realized lore and storyline ( here) is nothing short of brilliant and grounds their music. Hailing from Boise, Idaho, they have been around the block in terms of creating synthwave music (having been active since 2013), but (in my opinion) have been sorely underrated most of that time. When Magic Sword cleared me to photograph them during their current tour with Avatar at the Fillmore, I was beyond stoked – both because this would be my first photographic experience in the Twin Cities, but also because Magic Sword are AWESOME. Being a recent transplant to the Minneapolis area, I was excited to get into the venues in the area and see what they’re like. There is one minor complaint and that is the sides are mixed up on the second vinyl according to the album. It was a special experience being at this concert. It shows dedication and the fact that this is something special. The comic book is nothing special, but it's just the fact that they added it that really seperates them from other vinyls. MAGIC SWORD BAND FACE CODEIt even comes with a comic book a download code for the MP3's (from a rather shady looking website, might I add). ![]() Not only do you get the vinyls, the album book opens up like a picture book, showing the "Magic Sword" and an epic scene. Wow, do I regret putting this off, this record is a real gem. For some reason or another, I decided to buy it. Other times I would even ask "Why do I even want the vinyl? They're good but not THAT good" (I regret thinking that). Sometimes I would not want to buy any vinyl, claiming that I had enough to last me for a bit. Sometimes there was another that I wanted to add to my collection that just became available. I put off buying this vinyl for a long time, can't remember exactly why. This is something you buy the licensing for your pixel art indie game, put on for a fun night of DnD, or just listen to alone because you are a total nerd. It is really good at showing different aspects of "The Hero's Journey" through music. It's definitely a cool dynamic to approach from and it is absolutely worth getting just to listen to the epic that is "In the Face of Evil". These guys sound exactly like some old school fantasy RPG and sounds like it's from the 80's at the same time. ![]()
